Coming soon to California is the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. This hydrogen-powered vehicle uses a fuel cell stack 33 percent more compact than its predecessor, the Honda FCX Clarity, for increased cabin space and even more power.
It launches in late 2016, and will only be available in our state, where customers can locate nearby hydrogen stations for refueling.
The Honda Clarity platform is beautiful -- a spacious interior with seating for five adults, furnished with environmentally responsible materials, and a broad stance with elegantly aerodynamic curves on the exterior. It would be a shame to use the platform for just one model, which will not be widely sold.
For customers not ready to take the plunge into hydrogen, Honda has announced that the Clarity Fuel Cell will be getting two electric siblings.
The Clarity Electric is due to launch in 2017, and will give drivers a different kind of gasoline-free driving experience.
The volume-seller of the trio will go on sale later in 2017 -- the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. It has a short all-electric range for daily commuting, and a gasoline engine that can kick in for extended-range trips.
